Abstract Many sculptures and mosaics of funerary art are known, but very few testimonies remain to us of the wall paintings and frescoes. At- mospheric agents and water infiltration are among the main causes of the dissolution of this artistic heritage, which over the years leaves less traces of its existence. At the Maggiore Cemetery in Crema, between the «campate di portico» that surround the cemetery church, some pictorial vestiges remain to document the quality of the valuable decorations by two artists from Crema who were active between the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century: Angelo Bacchetta (Crema, 1841-1920) and Eugenio Giuseppe Conti (Crema, 1842 - Milan, 1909). By studying the bibliographical evidence relating to these painters and investigating journalistic, archival and photographic sources, it was possible to reconstruct a catalogue of the artworks, both existing and dispersed, destined to embellish the chapels of Crema’s main cemetery.
Sommario Numerose sculture e mosaici di arte funeraria sono noti, ma ci restano pochissime testimonianze delle pitture murali e degli affreschi. Tra le principali cause della dissoluzione di questo patrimonio artistico vi sono gli agenti atmosferici e le infiltrazioni d’acqua, che nel corso degli anni ne cancellano progressivamente le tracce. Al Cimitero Maggiore di Crema, tra le «campate di portico» che circondano la chiesa del cimitero, permangono alcuni vestigi pittorici a documentare la qualità delle pregevoli decorazioni realizzate da due artisti cremaschi attivi tra la seconda metà dell’Ottocento e l’inizio del Novecento: Angelo Bacchetta (Crema, 1841-1920) ed Eugenio Giuseppe Conti (Crema, 1842 – Milano, 1909). Attraverso lo studio delle fonti bibliografiche relative a questi pittori e l’indagine di fonti giornalistiche, archivistiche e fotografiche, è stato possibile ricostruire un catalogo delle opere, sia esistenti sia disperse, destinate a ornare le cappelle del principale cimitero di Crema.
